Announcement: My first stockist to get the ball rolling

About time! I feel like my progress has been a little stunted, but I’m glad the pace is picking up for me.

I’ve finally put together my first proper collection! All in all, at least 4 years in the making. I’ve poured my heart and soul into every piece. The bulk of my collection consists of chainmaille pieces, but I’ll have my vinyl record earrings and cable tie neck pieces too.

I’m very excited to announce MATCHBOX as my first stockist for my first collection!

The boutique is having their launch party on Friday, 6 Sep, so my collection will be available from Friday onwards!

I’m definitely working to get my work stocked at more stores, and having store-exclusive pieces as well, so keep a lookout!

In the meantime, like me on Facebook here and follow me on Instagram @thekangcraftster!

Out and About: August 2012

I’ll be peddling my wares at a few events this month.

1. Singapore River Market

dates: 10–12 & 17–19 August 2012 [fri to sun]
time: 3.00PM to 10.00PM daily
venue: central@clarke quay, along the Singapore river

I’ve always seen the bazaar along the river, always wondered how to get a booth and ALWAYS forgotten to find out how. Fortunately for me, someone from the company managing the river market asked if I was interested.

2. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Entrepreneurship & Innovation Week 闹 Nào Marketplace

date: 13 and 14 August 2012 [Mon & tue]
time: 10.30AM to 5.30PM
venue: NTU Plaza @ South Spine

Without realising, I’m turning into an entrepreneur of sorts! But still, ‘Craftster’ before anything else. The event seems a little off-beat for me, but I think it’ll be worth my time. Thankfully, they partnered with MAAD, otherwise I would have missed the opportunity.

Facebook page here.

3. OH FLEAS! @ The Arts House

date: 24 to 26 August 2012 [Fri to sun]
time: 1.00PM to 9.00PM
venue: The Arts House

Frankly, I don’t know why it’s so difficult to name a market. Despite the name, there will be NO FLEAS at the market and no second-hand crap. (The name should be ‘OH FLEAS! BE GONE!’. Also, the ONLY legit flea market in Singapore can only be Sungei Road.) Anyways, this is an arts market that aims to showcase creativity.

It is part of the Causeway Exchange Festival, which runs from 23 to 26 Aug. Their aim is basically to bring together art and culture from Malaysia and Singapore. Pretty interesting! I definitely want to establish myself in Malaysia in the future too!

Facebook page here. More info on the festival here.

So mark your calendars! I’m really excited for August!

Out and About: Sale-Lah-Pura @ PLAY Club

It’s August already! I have all my weekends booked for this month to peddle my wares. I’ll update the events on a nearer date.

Meanwhile, for my first bazaar of the month, supporting the club I frequent and SPCA [space rental goes to SPCA],

Date: 3 August 2012 [tomorrow]
Time: 7.00PM to 11.00PM
Venue: PLAY Club
Facebook event page here.

Also happening the same night at Red Dot Design Museum is MAAD. I won’t be showing for this, since Red Dot and Play are just a stone’s throw away. 2 places to go have a look-see!

Upcoming: Inside Out Party @ SAM

Hi all, the Inside Out Party at Singapore Art Museum is happening again this Saturday!

There is a bazaar going on as well, and I’ll be there to push my wares! I’m being very selective about the bazaars I take part in, so TRUST MY JUDGEMENT; it’ll be fun! (I hope there’s free beer! As with the last time round. Haha!)

This is happening on 20 March 2010, this coming Saturday, from 6.30PM to 2.00AM, at SAM@8Q. It’s basically a few steps away from the main Singapore Art Museum building. Do show your support and come with cash! I’m always adding new items to my collection, so there will definitely be something for everyone!

P.S. A shout-out to and for the nice folks at RCGNTN. They’re throwing their first party, RCGNIZE: The First Edition, at Haji Lane (not very far away from SAM), so do support them as well! AND THERE’S DEFINITELY FREE BOOZE THERE. I would love to be able to attend. RCGNTN Facebook group here. RCGNIZE party Facebook event page here.

Announcement: Vinyl Cuffs at FrüFrü & Tigerlily

So following an intensive 6-month particiaption in flea markets and bazaars, I decided to lay off these events simply because it drew a crowd that was keen in sniffing out cheap deals. Therefore, my creations became severely under-priced; in particular, my vinyl cuffs.

Subsequently, I decided to cease production of the cuffs. Right when I was about to let go of it completely, Ginette from FrüFrü & Tigerlily took an interest and wanted to stock my cuffs at the store.

Voila! Vinyl record cuffs by theKANG will be stocked at the FrüFrü & Tigerlily store, which is located within cult boutique Blackmarket. Each cuff retails at S$45.00. They come in a nice box that I made with the record sleeves too!

The three designs available:

FrüFrü & Tigerlily store opening party happens tomorrow, 12 March 2010, Friday, from 7.00PM. FREE BEER sponsered by Heineken.

Anyways, I’m just really excited that the cuffs, one of my pioneer ventures, made it to the stores first! I shall push the chainmaille stuff next, but I will need to figure out the packaging first. It’s amazing what a nice frame can do to a picture, you know.

Upcoming: MAAD

It’s time to go MAAD!

Yay! It’ll be my first time participating; I’m so excited! I’m so done with the rest of the flea markets and bazaars in Singapore. I hope to take part in MAAD regularly. MAAD happens the first weekend of every month.

The February session happening this weekend, 6 and 7 Feb, 11.00AM to 7.00PM at red dot design museum. Come on down for some fun! And of course, do some Valentine’s Day/Chinese New Year shopping!

Lotsa other activities going on as well, including the silver clay workshop I attended the other time conducted by Nana from Roomism. Plus, I have a whole bunch of new stuff! There’s definitely something for everyone; my creations definitely have a more varied range now. Do drop by, say hi and tango with Tiger!

To get to red dot design museum, use exit B at Tanjong Pagar MRT Station. To your left, you will see Osvaldo Restaurant in a white building. Walking down along the white building, you will see a red building. That is red dot Traffic Building! The museum is inside.

The Silver Clay Pendant

Yesterday, I created my first silver pendant! It is, in my terms, extremely tiny, but it was a good beginner’s trial and the process was fun! I basically spent an afternoon at Red Dot Design Museum with Nana from Roomism who was conducting the class. It was my first time attempting something that is completely custom.

Working with Precious Metal Clay(PMC), which is basically a modelling clay with silver molecules suspended in it. PMC is manufactured by Mitsubishi, developed in the 90’s.

Kept the design fairly simple, although the possibilities are ENDLESS. I have never worked extensively with clay, so I was a little apprehensive at first. But then it wasn’t really that bad. I’m a very kinesthetic learner, so I got the hang of it pretty quickly.

The raw modelled piece drying off on a coffee warmer. It was like playing with plasticine. VERY NOSTALGIC!

The dried clay pieces ready to be fired in a kiln to get the final silver piece. The round pieces here have paper cut-outs embedded in them, so the pendant would have a debossed effect, since the paper would obviously disintegrate after firing.

The pieces are put into the kiln, fired at 775˚C for 15 minutes. There was such anticipation! MAAD Market was going on as well, so you had the designers/crafters/artisans mingling and waiting for the final silver pieces to be ready. But things are not so instant around here!

The pieces come out looking all pale and powdery and you think, “What?! That’s it?!” They’re basically .999 silver pieces already. All it takes is ‘some’ buffing and polishing. By ‘some’, I mean 1-2 hours of. I would happily put in 3 hours of buffing to get a piece right. I’m patient. REALLY patient.

The buffing process was strangely therapeutic for me. It put me in some sort of a trance as I slowly see the surface become shinier. I love shiny things. But it was agreed that my pendant should retain a slightly raw look.

A bit of patina will make this pop with all the texture, but overall, I’m really happy with it. Not too bad for a first time!
