The Collages From The Past

I have been cutting up vinyls all morning and afternoon, my hands are sore and my brain floated into another dimension and I thought, I used to enjoy doing collages, didn’t I?

The one thing I get inspired most from is textures. Then I remembered all the collages I did a few years back. Why not share it here? At least it’s a breather from all my jewellery stuff.

This was done in 2006. A self-portrait project based on creating texture.

be yourself poster collage

This one in 2006 too. I think it was some faux advertisement thingy. Haha! Okay, it was a poster advert for Crocs. I loved my orange Crocs back then. They were rather new in the market at that time, okay!

Some random collages I did for fun. No true concept, mostly experimental.

freitag backpack collage poster

This is one of my favourite collages of all time. Another faux poster advert, this time for Freitag bags. Still love Freitag and still using the Freitag backpack I own. Love the crackle background. I remember just crushing a piece of paper and staining it with OLIVE OIL. Haha!

I would very much like to spend 3-4 hours doing a collage, but I just can’t find the time now. And another thing I can’t find—the functional aspect of collage. I don’t like things to just hang on walls. I’d rather things hang on a human body. Therefore, back to jewellery! Hahaha!

But that’s something for me to think about in the future when I have a greater scope of production methods.

Upcoming: Chic POP Street Market @ Zouk KL

Zouk SG, no; Zouk KL, YES!

ChicPOPIt’s next weekend, people! And I’m gonna be there! I finally agreed to go after much hesitation(Joyce from Tongue in Chic invited me). Plus I guess I’ve just been dying to check out Kuala Lumpur. I checked my passport and the last time I got out of Singapore was in October 2005! Haha!

Chic POP Street Market happening on 3 and 4 October, Saturday and Sunday, 11AM to 6PM at Zouk KL. Looks like it’s gonna be fun. I’m so excited!

The Little White Roses Mesh Bib Necklace

Somehow, I thought to myself, It’ll be really cool if I incorporated the jump ring rosettes into a mesh! And so I did.

little white roses mesh

This was achieved with the Japanese 4-in-1 weave and I alternated the rosettes with plain rings. I completely adore the implied criss-cross lines! I didn’t really expect the ‘lines’ because I was really just experimenting to see how the mesh would turn out.

I made a triangular mesh since I keep seeing a bib in my head. I REALLY like bib/collar pieces.

If the mesh sits lower on the torso, then the structure slumps and plunges into this deep V arrowhead:

The Vinyl With Lines

I went to the Sungei Road flea market on Tuesday with Hairianto because he was looking for vinyl records. The uncle with the vinyls wasn’t there that day, but we still managed to sift out a couple of pieces. Hairianto uses the records as a ‘greeting card’, which is frankly not a bad idea. But I still feel that it’s blasphemous to be under-utilising vinyls.

Anyways, so I was helping him with the birthday ‘card’ and I essentially just did some line graphics with a silver Painty marker.

And I have to say, I LOVE the effect of the silver ink against the black vinyl. I want to see how this works on a cuff!

FleaFlyFloFun 19 Sep @ HOME Club

ffff

Setting up a stall this Saturday, 19 Sep, at Home Club. The flea runs from 3.00PM to 10.00PM. Do drop by and make merry!

The Over-Charmed Draped Chain Necklace

I combined a bunch of chains that were either thrifted, made or bought and dangled trinkets all over. A very busy and eclectic piece.

over-charmed necklace

I’ve come to realise that it’s really challenging to dangle charms off a draped chain piece. Yes, it might look random, but it actually takes a whole lot of trial and error to get the look right. I’m definitely not done with this one.

The Sungei Road Trinkets

I went treasure hunting on Saturday at the Sungei Road flea market and scooped up a bunch of trinkets. I think it’s really fun to re-invent found jewellery or jewellery parts into new jewellery pieces. I find it thrilling that you never know what you’re going to chance upon.

indian trinkets

These are pretty much just Indian jewellery parts. Love the ethnic flavour though. And they’ll work like charms (pun intended).

Then there’s this gorgeous bead and ball chain dangle necklace! Love the colour of it! But as gorgeous as it is, I still insist on taking it apart and making it into something new. It looks too delicate for my taste.

The Box Weave Chain Link Necklace

Walking past hardware stores, you’ll always see these reels of plastic/metal chain links. They look quite industrial, yet my friends and I always think about using them as necklaces.

plastic chain links

So the whole week I was obsessing with the box and byzantine weave, and decided to make a chain link necklace combining both weaves.

It’s box weave loops connected by smaller byzantine weave loops. A chunky and gorgeous piece.
